Малцина са уловили нежната красота на природата като Иван Шишкин. Руски майстор, който вкусва от редките плодове на успеха на един художник, но и горчива трагедия. Художетвеното му пътешествие  започва в ранна възраст с молив в ръка.

Официалното му художествено обучение започва през 1852 г., записва се в Московското живописно училище и впоследствие в Императорската художествена академия. Завършва Императорската академия със златен медал и стипендия за рисуване в Европа.

1874 г. бележи началото на дълга поредица от трагични събития. Баща му, съпругата му и двамата му синове почиват за кратък период. По-късно Шишкин се жени повторно за една от учениците си – Олга Лагода, която почина след раждането на дъщеря им. Въпреки трагедиите той продължи да рисува и да се усъвършенства. Утрото му в борова гора превърща името на Шишкин познато в цяла Русия. Но заслуга за това в голяма степен се дължи на Константин Савицки на който идва идеята да се добавян четирите мечки към картината. Без такова допълнение това би било просто друг – макар и зашеметяващ – пейзаж на Шишкин.

В този пост, ще разглеждаме по-отблизо  една емблематична част от живота и творчеството на Винсент Ван Гог.

Една от най-коментираните картини – спалнята в Арл на Винсент ван Гог , колоритното изображение на спалнята, със странна перспектива и типичен стил на ван Гог.

Ето някои от основните и интересни факти за картината:

Картината изобразява спалнята на ван Гог на 2 Place Lamartine в Арл, Bouches-du-Rhône, Франция, която е известна като „Жълтата къща“. Той има планове за Жълтата къща да стане колония на творци, където художниците могат да останат, да творят  и да се подкрепят взаимно. Това никога не се получава напълно, но той успя да убеди другар художник и художник Пол Гоген да остане за кратко при него. Вратата отляво на картината води към гостната, където отсяда Гоген.

Ван Гог изпратеща писмо и скица до Гоген относно картината. В негов стил, с груба четка, с дебел слой impasto, изобразил стените с бледи цветове, пода с  червеникави оттенъци, столовете и леглото в хром жълто, във възглавниците и чаршафите вмъкнат и много блед зелен-цитрон, докато отдава значение на одеялото в кърваво червено, и вмъквайки зеленото в прозореца. С помощта на всички тези много разнообразни тонове, където почти няма бяло, освен малка нотка в огледалото с черната си рамка.

По-долу е картината на Ван Гог на която изобразява  Жълтата къща, в която посреща с огромно желание приятеля си Пол Гоген.

На 8 май 1889 г. ван Гог е установен в психиатрична клиника в Сен Реми. Той остана малко повече от година до 16 май 1890. През това време той създава  множество рисунки и картини, включително още две версии на Спалнята в Арл, показани по-долу:

Трите версии на картината са приблизително еднакви, но ако се вгледате внимателно на двете по-долу, ще забележите, че картините на стената се променят.

Странната перспектива

В картината има силно усещане за перспектива, като много от твърдите, сковани линии се приближават до точка около средата. Усещането за перспектива обаче е неловко и несъвършено.

Част от това вероятно се дължи на художествените решения на Ван Гог (той очевидно не е бил фокусиран върху заснемането на спалнята с пълен реализъм). Друга част се дължи на неясни размери на помещението, с далечната стена с прозорец на наклон.

Стилистично очертаване

В типичен стил ван Гог повечето от обектите в картината имат силно очертание. Това дава на картината стил на карикатура и стилизиран вид.

Забележете как Ван Гог използва по-тъмни очертания около дъното на предметите (близките по-долу са чудесен пример). Картината е с много твърда и ъгловата, с предимно геометрични фигури, използвани за изобразяване на рамката на леглото, рамки за картини, маси, столове, прозорци и врати. Някои  форми са разпръснати сред картината – леглото, възглавници, дрехи, висящи зад леглото, и хавлия, висящи от лявата страна. Това създава фин контраст във формата, като същевременно запазва общата твърда тема.

Твърдите форми също помагат да се подчертае неловкото усещане за перспектива в картината (много по-лесно е да се идентифицират проблеми в перспектива с твърди форми, отколкото с органични форми). Това изглежда да се в полза на цялостния призив на картината, въпреки че не е напълно точна.

Също така, забележите как контурите помагат за укрепване на твърдите форми, докато органичните форми имат много по-меки очертания.

Живописта не е само за улавяне на това, което виждате; тя е също така за улавяне на това, което искате да видите или как обектът ви кара да се чувствате. В този случай, Ван Гог е искал да улови „абсолютната почивка“ на спалнята си.

Today’s article is dedicated to one of my favourite artists - Claude Monet. Monet and many other great Impressionists were a major factor in the development of a number of other artists, especially in terms of paint and brush.

Just like most of the artists, when I took the brush, I was impressed by the details and I tried to paint everything in fine detail. I realised later on that this meticulous approach could hamper the creation of a really fascinating painting. When I started examining the works of Monet and many other Impressionists, I found out that using fewer details in the painting allows you to express refine beauty much better and also lets your imagination do part of the work.

Monet’s passion for working “en plein air” was expressed through a famous story concerning one of his first really ambitious projects – his large painting Women in the Garden (1866 – 1867) as well as in a big number of other works.1866 – 1867) и голяма поредица негови картини.

Many of Monet’s works are characterised by mixed short strokes of the brush. He was both strongly criticised and highly praised for this technique.

In the close-up of the Water Lilies painting (picture 2), you can see the accumulation of different colours – green, blue and violet. It also shows how Monet used a thicker layer of paint for the red and yellow flowers and how this approach enhances the depth and the shape of the painting.

In the Rock in Dieppe painting, Monet used short, overwhelming stokes of various colours to give the illusion of detail.

He used stronger colours and higher contrast for the foreground compared with the background. This enhances the feeling of depth in the painting. The fences on the cliff help us notice the structure of the land. We can see the relatively cool colours used for the shadows that contrast against the warm lights.

It is all a game of colours, contrasts and iridescence. The edge that separates the sea and the sky is almost completely lost. The small and dark accents used for the boats in the distance help distinguish the sea from the sky. This reveals the mastership and illusion we can all draw on.

A politician, statesman, Prime Minister of the UK and artist. He was best known for his peppery speech as well as his love of good whiskey and cigars. We are now going to examine this erudite man from a different and more interesting angle - from the perspective of art.

Churchill took up painting as early as 1910 and he constantly returned to his hobby during his glamorous career. For the British statesman this hobby became a way of escaping from his stressful career as well as a source of delight. He was working with a naïve impressionist style that he significantly improved over time. Most of all, the politician loved to paint calm landscapes depicting village scenery which helped him cope with stress.

“Painting came to my rescue in a most trying time,” Churchill wore in his book Painting as a Pastime (1920).

Churchill eventually created 550 paintings, something that helped him improve his visual acuity, powers of observation and memory. His artistic distraction would have flourished even further had he not focused his career on other fields – a world-known writer, orator and political leader.

The prominent political figure was rather humble in his self-realisation as a painter – he took part in an international exhibition in Paris, signing his works with a fictitious name.

Churchill was highly productive over the next five decades. He painted landscapes and seascapes in the open air. And despite his claims of being just an amateur, he managed to develop an incredible flair for art.

Nevertheless, Churchill wanted to further improve his technique and started learning from the works of the best artists at the time. He admired the works of Impressionist and post-Impressionist masters such as Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse. It is even known that he travelled to the same places where they had created their works years ago, seeking the light and the land that had proven to be a source of inspiration…

“We cannot aspire to masterpiece,” Churchill wrote. – “We may content ourselves with a joy ride in a paint box. And, for this, Audacity is the only ticket.”

– What is more valuable to you – an Andy Warhol painting from 1963 or a Chanel suit?

– I would definitely prefer the painting, although I would not choose this particular style. Over the years I started collecting paintings and I would be happy to extend my collection with another one.

What role does fashion play in your paintings?

My paintings are a reflection of my inner impulses. If I don’t have a muse, I won’t be able to create anything on the white canvas. My paintings are not affected by this ephemeralness, by a client or even a friend’s wishes, and that is why I don’t take orders. The energy I have at the moment is imprinted on each of my canvases.  I have paintings filled with anger and you can notice it at first glance. Fortunately, most of my works bring pleasure and are blessed with incredible energy.

What fashion brands do you like and wear?

I follow a lot of fashion brands but I have always had a soft spot for shoes and bags. It gives me real pleasure to see a woman who has chosen an elegant bag and shoes as a finishing touch to her outfit. High heels are compulsory. Catwalk. Unrivalled!

How would you define your personal style?

I have always preferred the elegant style. Dresses are an essential part of my wardrobe and I think that they bring exceptional femininity to every woman. A woman shows her style and class through her overall look but a dress always helps.

Two years ago, Louis Vuitton’s menswear artistic director Virgil Abloh compared streetwear to an art movement. Do you agree?

Absolutely, it is also a way of self-expression.

Fashion trends are constantly changing, only to come back in style after a certain period of time. What is your favourite fashion trend of all time?

Some things really leave a mark in time. I would say Chanel – in perfumery.

How do social networks, such as Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok, affect your personal and professional life?

For many years I refused to seek publicity and I deliberately did not use this type of social media to present myself but the truth is that this is the way to reach a large audience in this dynamic world – to promote your work, to become recognisable, as well as to arouse interest in what you create.

To what extent do you keep your personal life private?

I definitely don’t think that one’s personal life should be on display. I promote my work, of course, I disclose a small part of my daily life because people want to feel my energy. They let me into their home through my paintings and they are interested in the lifestyle the artist leads. However, I set certain boundaries that I need in order to feel comfortable.

We learned that you visited Paris at the end of the summer. How different is the French capital in light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic?

I had an interesting experience, it was very different from my previous trips to Paris. It was beautiful because I had never before felt the city so calm and quiet, spreading its romance in a different, remarkable way. In these moments you can feel the real smell of Paris and its history.

As an artist, how did you feel at the Louvre, surrounded by so many priceless works of art?

Every visit to a world-class gallery or opera is an exceptional experience for me. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the Louvre, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Hermitage, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, Somerset House in London – all the famous landmarks where you can find really priceless works of art. Each time it was a remarkable experience.

What is the main responsibility that lies on the shoulders of an artist?

Our primary responsibility is to future generations – we have a responsibility to teach them to love and appreciate art.

In the end, what is the greatness you are striving for?

“Greatness” is a very interesting expression to use nowadays when the fast-moving interests are placed on a pedestal. What inspired me to delve into the world of fine arts was that this way you leave a trace of yourself behind. I firmly believe that it is always more valuable to invest in a painting, to give a friend or a business partner a work of art as a gift as it will not only give pleasure but also remain for future generations, instead of making a gift that will be obsolete in the next year.
